Unlike a Lot of Back Pain Sufferers Who Have Lower Back Pain, My Upper Back Was the Problem

What made my back feel better was a good massage. Unlike a lot of people who suffer from lower back pain, mine hits me in my upper back. My shoulders can hurt so bad that I lose strength in my arms. My arm strength will actually fail me at times if I have to reach out to my side at a height equal to or greater than the height of my shoulder. I could not take the pain any longer, and my medical doctor could not offer any help. I went to a chiropractor in San Jose to see if chiropractic medicine would help me.

When I had X-Rays and an MRI, my MD could only see some arthritis. He said that it was not explaining the extent of my weakness or pain. (more…)


I Just Went Skiing in Utah

I went to see my chiropractor in Sacramento about two months ago, because of the same usual problems that I have. We got to talking while he was working on my back and I told him that we were thinking about going to the mountains for skiing. He told me that he owned a place in Utah, in the Paiute mountains. Of course he said that this was a really big place and that most of the people who rented it from him were extended families and large groups of friends. He was not kidding, but when you looked at the place and you thought about how it worked you could see that it could end up being a good deal. (more…)


I Hurt My Back Moving Last Weekend

I was really happy with my new apartment. I had problems with the people in the old complex. They all wanted to get dramatic at about three o clock in the morning while I was trying to get some sleep before I could get up at seven o clock for work. At any rate I ended up having to see a Concord chiropractors when the move was over. The only place that I could find which had what I needed was up on the third floor and this is not the sort of place where they have an elevator. I had been working to make it easier. (more…)


I Thought I Had a Nice Apartment Until I Finally Moved into an Exceptional One in Minnesota

When I lived back east I remember people in the building I lived in going nuts clamoring for a better apartment when they heard someone was moving out. No one seemed to be happy with what they had. Granted, some of the apartments were better than others, but none of them were bad. Top floor corner apartments were in demand. I guess people thought they were quieter. I don’t know. I liked being in the middle. I could turn down my heat in the winter and still be warm! You can click here to see the place I live in now that I moved back to Minnesota. I never had quartz countertops in any apartment before, and this is the first time I have had new stainless steel appliances. This is my first apartment with a pool, and not just an ordinary pool. (more…)


Moving Closer to Their Father

I will never say that it is easy raising a child on my own, but I still feel very blessed to be able to do this. My ex and I are still on friendly enough terms, but he is not as hands on with our two daughters as I would like him to be. That is something we are working on, and the first step in trying to make it easy on all of us was to look at Jackson apartments for rent that are closer to where he lives with his new wife and their child.

Before I moved into Woodlands Apartments, it would take us about an hour to meet up to either drop off the girls or pick them up. Now that we are living so much closer, it only takes about 15 minutes. (more…)


The 4 Minute Workout – Tabata Intervals

Why is it hard to get in shape? Why is it even harder to stay in shape? Well, if you’re a family man like me your day begins with getting the kids ready for kindergarten and yourself ready for work. Exercise is pretty much out of the question in the morning, at least during the weekdays, simply because there is no time. Of course, I could get out of bed an hour earlier at 4:40 a.m. but I’m pretty sure that´s a habit I will eventually break.

The next opportunity for exercise occurs after having picked up the kids from kindergarten at about 5:30 p.m. There is of course the question of making dinner for the family but I guess my wife and me can alternate doing that so that at least one of us can get some exercise every other day. Then again, it´s not so easy looking after the kids and at the same time cooking dinner. It would be great if my wife could do that while I am cooking. Oh, right.

After dinner there is a window of about 45 minutes before it’s time to put the kids to bed. I believe this time is well spent playing with them. If it’s my wife’s turn to put them to bed I can do my exercise then. I’m done at roughly 9 p.m. That leaves about an hour of kid-free time with my wife to make the marriage blossom before it’s time to go to sleep. At this time we´re both pretty much exhausted and just want to wind down in front of the TV. Not ideal.

Under these circumstances it is actually quite hard both to form and to keep a good exercise habit.  Is there a way around this?  Yes!  Let’s look at the solution:

The marriage saving exercise is called Tabata intervals. It can be done with pretty much any exercise or combination thereof but I will just show you what I do. After having done any warm-up you like for two minutes do the following:

  1. Do 20 seconds of maximum intensity high knee skips
  2. Rest for 10 seconds
  3. Do 20 seconds of maximum intensity burpees
  4. Rest for 10 seconds
  5. Do 20 seconds of maximum intensity mountain climbers
  6. Rest for 10 seconds
  7. Do 20 seconds of maximum intensity jumping lunges
  8. Rest for 10 seconds
  9. Repeat 1-8 one more time
  10. You’re done. Go take a shower. Then spend some time with your significant other

This 4 minute workout is actually quite challenging and will definitely get your heart pumping and sweat flowing. Don’t be fooled by the short amount of time you’re working!

There is a scientific study backing up the effects of the Tabata protocol. It was conducted in 1997 by Dr. Izumi Tabata and his research colleagues at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. I’ll skip the details of the study and head straight for the conclusion:

Four minutes of Tabata intervals can do more for boosting aerobic and anaerobic capacity than one hour of endurance training!

The tabata regime can be incorporated to your day no matter how busy you are. So what are you waiting for? Try it! Best of luck!
